Hand-collected from the beautiful landscapes of Vermont, this one-of-a-kind serpentine stone has an incredible mixture of natural colors, textures, and geological character.
What initially appeared to be a heavily weathered stone revealed a beautiful combination of soft minty greens, deeper blue-gray tones, rusty orange iron staining, and delicate mineral veins running throughout.
Rather than completely reshape the piece, I chose to follow its natural curves, carefully grinding, smoothing, and polishing the surface while leaving part of its original weathered exterior untouched.
The result is a beautiful contrast between the rough, naturally aged stone and the smooth, polished surface beneath.
Every angle offers something a little different, from the earthy orange tones to the intricate veins crossing through the darker minerals.
A unique piece of Vermont’s geological history, preserved and finished by hand.
🌎 Geological Background:
Serpentine minerals form through a geological process called serpentinization, where water interacts with certain magnesium- and iron-rich minerals, commonly found in rocks originating from Earth’s upper mantle.
This process transforms the original minerals into serpentine-group minerals, often producing beautiful shades of green.
Vermont has a fascinating geological history involving ancient oceanic environments, mountain-building events, and metamorphism.
The rusty orange coloration visible throughout this piece is consistent with iron-oxide staining, which can develop as iron-bearing minerals react with water and oxygen over time.
The thin, lighter-colored veins may represent ancient fractures that were gradually filled with minerals carried by circulating fluids.
Together, these features create a beautiful record of geological change.

🌲 The StoneBorn Story:
Every stone I work on begins with a little curiosity.
This particular piece caught my attention because of its weathered appearance and the hints of color showing through its surface.
I wanted to see what was underneath without taking away the natural character that made it interesting in the first place.
Using my flat lap, I carefully worked through portions of the exterior, gradually refining the surface through several stages of grinding and smoothing before finishing with a felt polishing pad.
I intentionally preserved part of the original surface, allowing the rough and polished areas to complement one another.
That’s something I’ve always enjoyed about lapidary work. It’s not necessarily about changing what nature created, but finding a way to appreciate what’s already there.
Hand-collected. Hand-polished. One of a kind.
