Serpentinite in Vermont formed deep beneath ancient ocean crust, where heat and pressure transformed ultramafic rock into the green serpentine minerals we find today. Over millions of years, exposure to water and oxygen created the iron-rich golden rind along the outside — a natural oxidation layer that gives this stone its striking two-tone appearance.

The interior remains dark and rich, protected from weathering until revealed through cutting and polishing.
