StoneBorn Creations Hand-Polished Petoskey Stone Fossil Coral Freeform Display Stone

A beautiful piece of ancient fossil coral completely transformed by hand polishing.

This Petoskey Stone started with a weathered, muted exterior where you could just begin to make out the fossil structure underneath. Once polished, the entire surface came alive with tightly packed coral patterns, each showing its own detailed center and delicate radiating lines.

I shaped and polished this piece while keeping its natural freeform character intact. Rather than trying to make it perfectly uniform, I followed the stone itself and let the fossil patterns remain the focus. The soft gray, cream and earthy brown tones give it a really natural look, while the polish brings out an incredible amount of detail.

Petoskey Stones are fossilized colonial rugose coral known as Hexagonaria, dating to the Devonian Period. What you’re seeing across the surface are the preserved structures of individual coral organisms that once formed part of a much larger colony.

This one was especially rewarding because so much of its detail was hidden before polishing. As each stage progressed, more and more of those individual fossil coral structures began showing themselves until the entire piece was covered in detail.

The goal isn’t to make nature perfect — it’s to uncover what was already there.
