StoneBorn Creations Hand-Polished Vermont Greenstone Freeform

This big, rugged stone was hiding an incredible interior beneath its heavily weathered exterior.

I worked this one completely by hand with a rotary hand tool, carefully opening and polishing the face while leaving the rest of the stone natural. What emerged is a deep forest-green interior filled with lighter green mineral patterns, creamy inclusions, and subtle movement throughout the stone.

The contrast is what makes this piece special. The polished face shows what was protected inside, while the back and edges still carry the naturally pitted, earthy brown weathering rind created by years of exposure.

Based on its appearance and the geology of the region, this specimen is best described as a metamorphosed mafic greenstone, though the exact mineral composition has not been laboratory confirmed. The area where it was found contains a complex mix of metamorphic rocks, and this stone was discovered among other strongly altered green and serpentinite-rich material.

Rather than cutting away everything natural to create a perfect shape, I try to preserve the features that tell its story. This piece is a perfect example — an unassuming, heavily weathered brook stone on the outside with an entirely different world hidden underneath.

I followed the natural shape by hand, exposing and polishing just enough of the interior to reveal its deep greens and mineral patterns while preserving the rugged exterior that made me pick it up in the first place.
