StoneBorn Creations Petoskey Stone Freeform – Hand Polished Fossil Coral with Natural Matrix

StoneBorn Creations Petoskey Stone Freeform – Hand Polished Fossil Coral with Natural Matrix

$85.00

This Petoskey stone took on a completely different character as I worked it.

Rather than polishing the entire stone smooth, I worked into one side, rounded and softened the edges, and followed the natural shape as the fossil coral pattern started coming through. I intentionally left part of the original rough surface along the bottom and back, creating a really cool contrast between the finished polish and the stone exactly as it started.

The polished areas reveal an incredible amount of detail, with tightly packed fossil coral patterns covering the surface. Up close, each individual corallite has its own shape and character, especially as the light moves across the polish.

Turn the piece over and portions of the original stone are still there — rough, natural and untouched.

It’s that transition from raw stone to polished fossil that makes this one of my favorite Petoskey transformations.

The StoneBorn Story:

I don’t usually go into a stone with an exact shape in mind, and this Petoskey was no different.

I started working one side and let the fossil pattern and natural shape determine where I went from there. As more of the coral structure appeared, I rounded the edges and continued smoothing the areas that made sense while leaving part of the original stone alone.

The result gives you both sides of the story in one piece — the rough Petoskey as it began and the ancient fossil pattern revealed underneath.

That’s one of the things I love most about working stone. Sometimes the best part isn’t polishing everything away. It’s knowing when to stop.

Energy & Symbolism:

Petoskey stones are traditionally associated with grounding, patience, connection to the past and appreciation for natural change.

Beyond symbolism, they are remarkable pieces of geologic history. Their distinctive pattern comes from ancient colonial coral preserved in stone over hundreds of millions of years.

Whether collected for its fossil history, natural beauty or symbolism, every Petoskey stone carries a pattern entirely its own.
