StoneBorn Creations – Hand-Polished Petoskey Stone | Fossilized Coral | Natural Freeform Display

$48.00

This beautiful Petoskey stone has some incredible fossil detail, with dozens of little coral patterns spread across its surface. The soft cream and gray colors contrast with the darker brown centers, making each individual formation stand out.

What I really enjoyed about this piece was seeing those patterns become more defined as I worked through the polishing process. Some of the coral cells are darker and more pronounced, while others are lighter and almost blend into the surrounding stone.

I chose to polish the patterned surfaces while leaving a portion of the original rough stone untouched. I love that contrast because you get to see both sides of its character, from the natural weathered surface to the intricate fossil structures underneath.

It’s a beautiful little piece of ancient history, and something that looks different depending on which way you turn it.

The StoneBorn Story:

Every stone I work on has something different to offer, and Petoskey stones are especially interesting to me because of the history behind them.

What you’re looking at is the preserved structure of an ancient coral colony that once lived in a warm, shallow sea covering parts of what is now the Great Lakes region.

Over millions of years, those coral skeletons became fossilized in limestone, preserving the tiny details that made up the original colony.

I worked this piece by hand in my Vermont workshop, bringing out the fossil patterns while leaving some of its original natural surface intact. That combination is something I really enjoy because it lets you appreciate both the stone as it was found and the detail revealed through polishing.

No two Petoskey stones have exactly the same patterns, and this piece is no exception.

Energy & Symbolism:

Petoskey stones are often associated with grounding, patience, and a connection to the natural world.

With their ancient fossil origins, they’re also sometimes viewed as symbols of endurance, transformation, and the passage of time.

Beyond any symbolism, there’s something pretty remarkable about holding a piece of coral that lived hundreds of millions of years ago.
